Our Implementation Action Plan 2024-25 introduces our reconciliation actions for July 2024 to June 2025.

Each year we will develop an annual action plan aligned to our Reconciliation Strategy.

Our three key focus areas for Reconciliation Actions are:

Organisational Capability

  • We will guide cultural engagement through development of internal process and guidelines
  • We will improve our workforce’s cultural safety, awareness and understanding
  • We will build our capacity to comply with the new Aboriginal Cultural Heritage legislation
  • We will develop strong governance practices to enable our reconciliation actions

Celebrate culture and learning

  • We will mark and celebrate culturally significant dates
  • With Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we will deliver community learning opportunities about traditional culture
  • With Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, we will create culturally welcoming places and spaces
  • We will support reconciliation activities proposed by the Canning community

Economic empowerment

  • We will recruit and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • We will increase spend with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, enabled through our procurement policy
  • We will strengthen our support for local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses

Backstory

The City of Canning developed and launched its first Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan in 2018. Almost all of our reconciliation actions in this plan were achieved.

The City has recruited more than 30 staff members across our organisation to form three key working groups to progress our reconciliation actions. Our reconciliation work is led by our internal Reconciliation Board and we have employed our first full-time permanent Aboriginal Engagement Officer.

The City has re-formed the Canning Reconciliation Action Group and new members are welcome.

Get Involved

The City welcomes community participation in our Reconciliation events and activities, volunteer participation if you would like to help us and any feedback you'd like to share with us.

Nominations for the Canning Reconciliation Action Group will be opening shortly and we will welcome nominations from Traditional Owners of the Djarlgarro Beelier region and surrounding Canning areas, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents. We also welcome non-Aboriginal residents with a passion for contributing to reconciliation.

Next Steps

The City of Canning will be working on implementing actions within the Action Implementation Plan. We will share project updates and upcoming events below.

We welcome ongoing participation, volunteer involvement and feedback on how we are going.
