Low Cost Urban Road Safety Program

The City of Canning (City) and Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) are working collaboratively on a new road safety initiative, the Low-Cost Urban Road Safety Program, to reduce the likelihood of crashes on local roads across the metropolitan area.

Low-cost road safety treatments will be applied to areas or entire streets to improve the safety of local roads and intersections. We want to reduce crashes and create a safer and more enjoyable environment for our community.

The next safety treatments are scheduled for the following streets in the St James Park area:

• Marquis Street
• Dumond Street
• Hedley Street
• Baldock Street
• Pollock Street
• Queen Street
• Palmerston Street

What will this project include?

The following treatments and improvements are planned:

• Raised safety platforms
• Mid-block platforms
• Mini roundabouts
• Parking nibs (road diet treatment)

These treatments will have positive impacts on speed reduction and crash reduction, with some benefit to amenity in the area.

The primary treatment selection criteria and principles for the URSP included:

• Applying Safe Systems Principles
• Reducing high casualty and high risk crashes on local streets
• Proactively reducing vehicle speeds
• Consideration of activity generators and land use
• Implement low-cost treatments on an area-wide or whole of street basis
• Maintaining movement for all road users.

How will this impact you?

Construction of these treatments is tentatively scheduled for July/August 2024. Upon completion of these works, the City will apply to MRWA for the installation of the new permanent road signs and line markings; MRWA can take approximately two months to install these, so the City will allow for road signs and line marking in the interim.

To complete the delivery and construction of this project, some temporary traffic management will be in place including, lane closures and short-term road closures. Specific details of any immediate impacts and disruptions will be communicated directly to affected businesses, residents, and property owners with a separate notification letter.

In addition, parking on the streets will be limited and likely redistribute to the surrounding streets. We understand this work may be disruptive to the local community and some traffic delays may be experienced, however we will make every effort to communicate any disruptions and thank you for your patience.
