Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore Management Plan

The detail within the draft Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore Management Plan makes this document a well informed reference for the continuing well balanced management of this very important corridor.

The overwhelming sentiment that came out of the consultation process was the importance of the natural environment and the draft Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore Management Plan supports this.

Disturbance of wildlife at Wadjup Point needs to be minimised. Suggest creating a picnic area with BBQ opposite Linkwater Street where there are existing parking bays, an expansive shaded area with a wide beach, near a jetty, has existing bins and benches and it is a dog exercise area.

I do not support the installation of a water refill station which I consider unnecessary, has the potential for posing health issues and maintenance problems.

Fabulous to have the natural values that underpin this stretch of foreshore given fitting prominence - as highlighted in the ‘Objectives’ as well as throughout the plan.
We are lucky to have this natural world as part of our everyday or every weekend lives - we also have a collective responsibility to care for it.
Thanks to City of Canning (management, Councillors, officers), Urbaqua consultants and community members for the opportunity to develop a management plan together.
I fully endorse the enhancement of the natural areas with more local native plantings (sedges, trees, shrubs, ground covers and grasses) as well as the planting of local native trees in the parkland areas as shade for foreshore users as well as ecological linkages for birds, insects and reptiles.
Serious consideration has been given to ‘hot island effect’ (from the reduction of gardens combined with increases in hard surfaces across our suburbs) and to the impacts of climate change.
I also fully endorse the passive recreation areas, installing car bays near these and the idea of large fenced areas for off-lead dog exercise as is so popular across Brisbane suburbs.
More water fountains, taps and dog bowls are supported, but not a special ‘water filling station’. These are costly, often break down, require power, have water filtration problems - and people already fill their bottles from style of water fountains provided.
I do not support a BBQ nor additional disability access at Wadjup Point, one of the declared ‘significant habitat areas’ as these would be in conflict with the whole idea of focussing on the natural habitat (eg feeding and resting birds), including reducing disturbance. There is wheelchair access along the dual use path that goes across the top of Wadjup Point and recommendations for BBQs near Zenith.
I support the value of the Wadjup-Gabbilju sign trail in telling the many stories of this foreshore.
I would like to see the Pleasant Place Dampland added to the ‘significant habitat areas’, it is another of the little natural gems along our foreshore.

I applaud the quality, detail and collaboration that has gone into producing this comprehensive report. There will be years of work to complete some objectives , many of which are ongoing and encourage community involvement.

I fully support the retention, preservation and conservation of all natural and environmental aspects of what currently exists. This report shows any proposed café, which we don’t need, could be flooded in future .

Please improve not develop the foreshore.

I am one of the MAJORITY that DON'T want a coffee shop on our foreshore. Why do we need another cafe when we already have Lo Quay and The Tribute Cafe nearby? What we need is open space!

Everyday I walk my dog down at the Shelley foreshore and I'm fiercely protective of this space. I don't want changes to the dog zone.

The Shelley Foreshore is a special place for everyone and we all should be trying to protect the environment for future generations.

I am impressed that there is a strong focus on preserving and enhancing the natural environment within this report. I totally agree that it's important for people to feel a natural connection with the environment and that this space should provide both active and passive recreational activities and spaces.

I'm so pleased that it was recommended to provide more picnic benches and shade/pergolas however am not a fan of the exercise equipment along the foreshore. I don't feel they are an attractive feature and after the novelty wears off - they aren't used as much, tend to get broken and become an eyesore. (as I've seen near the Curtin Rowing club foreshore in Manning). I understand they would be considered a popular option for people's fitness but I would just like to see that there is careful, thoughtful planning of where they will be along the river. (Hard to believe that each piece costs $4000- seems very high.)

I believe it would have been very beneficial if this Shelley foreshore report would have been done with the Shelley Beach Plan. I don't understand why these two places had to be separated... I thought for the best outcome they would have been planned to be improved together. I can only wish that they keep the environment the main priority with the other plan!!!

Please, please, please don't build a permanent coffee/restaurant along the foreshore!! This will just ruin the area. But once again I understand there are a lot of people who would love a coffee down by the river - so perhaps a small, mobile coffee van would be an option so they can come and go with minimal impact.

I love our foreshore! We are so lucky to have it protected and improved.

Congratulations to all those concerned for producing a highly readable, balanced and comprehensive draft Shelley-Rossmoyne Foreshore Management Plan which reinforces the overall aim to preserve and enhance the naturalness of the river foreshore as an ecological corridor and to prioritise conservation.

I am broadly supportive of the key objectives and recommendations contained therein with the exception of a barbecue area at Wadjup Point, 3.1c, which appears contrary to the report’s acknowledgement that this is a significant habitat area already requiring careful visitor management.

I encourage the early implementation of objective 1.2a, formal identification of three significant habitat areas, as a quick win and to help alleviate further stress to precious wildlife in these areas.

The Shelley Beach Landscape Master Plan should recognise and complement the overriding proposals contained in this report.

We are blessed with this beautiful river and the flora and fauna around it. It's our responsibility to do everything we can to protect it for future generations. We have cafes and restaurants everywhere!!! Green spaces are proven to lift people's spirits and our children need nature too. Once it's gone..it's gone. Ever heard of travel mugs. I love my coffee and eating out as much as anyone but I don't need a cafe or restaurant every 500m... we need to realise the precious gift we have. If you need cafes above a beautiful river and foreshore then go to Mt Lawley or Subi.
PROTECT THE SHELLEY FORESHORE!

Given this is an entire-of-foreshore plan, could recharge points for gophers, wheelchairs be looked at? I believe Town of Vic Park installed a gopher charge point along Albany Hwy and I see similar aspects to that in this plan, ie, long sealed paths, a myriad of things to stop and see or pleasant places to settle for lunch. A day's outing could be made more enjoyable and safe knowing well-marked charge points were available. Thank you.

I'm grateful to City staff for the high emphasis on broad benefits for the disabled community in this plan. It gives the impression this is non-negotiable and represents a high watermark for Canning. Thank you.

Regarding resolving the management responsibilities and vesting of land between Canning and the Dept of Planning, Lands and Heritage, that relates to the currently unallocated Crown land along the foreshore, I think it important that negotiations are held at that point to determine what will happen to any community facilities that may be situated upon this land (and it is a long strip of land) at any possible future point of handing back those lands to the state, for whatever reason. It appears that in handing back reserves to the state govt, in relation to the Bentley Regeneration project (now known as the Bentley 360), the City was compensated for the work it had put in to that area's reserves over decades, but there now appears no clear plan to replace any or all community amenities that are or were there in the last five years. This is obviously very concerning as our population densifies.
My suggestion is that the City, Councillors and Community ensure we enshrine in the foreshore management plan that any community facilities that are on Crown Land, if and when handed over to Canning, must be relocated and reinstated in full, nearby, should vested lands have to be handed back at some point.

And no, thank you, to any cafe or commercial activation at any point along the foreshore or the Shelley Beach Park. Unfortunately there appears to be a number of bids for a cafe et al listed in this round of consultation outcomes, despite the fact it does not relate directly to the Shelley Beach Park landscape master plan and the area of the foreshore is otherwise very limited.

I LOVE this master plan and it’s focus on the environment!! Would be absolutely amazing to see this awesome and detailed focus on the environment throughout the city!! I praise the city for coming up with such a balanced and environmentally conscious plan, as many other cities should also follow. Good work!!

Let's do all we can to keep the Canning river healthy. Open space is as much for nature as it is for humans and the green strip between Shelley Bridge and Yagan park is an important corridor for water birds.

No Cafe No Restaurant. Leave these at the shops where they belong and do not put them in our lovely open space. Future generations will not look back and wish they had more shops they will wish they had more open space. If you desperately need caffeine to enjoy the open space take a walk to the tribute Cafe it is less than 500 meters up the street or visit Lo Quay.

I love the idea of having more trees and plants around and I would love to see some more picnic benches and gazebos. If you can a water fountain in the dog area near Shelley dog beach please.

We live in Shelley and we would very much like to see a cafe on the Shelley foreshore

Great to see that the Environment is the main focus of this report. I am really pleased that biodiversity and a green corridor along the river is going to be encouraged. We love seeing the variety of birdlife and the occasional dolphin while walking along the river.

Please don't change the dog zone area as we walk our dog there everyday.

I know this plan doesn't include the Shelley Beach Masterplan however it would be important to see the City of Canning and the Canning Council merge the two Shelley plans successfully to complement each other. It would be very disappointing to see if a permanent commercial coffee shop is developed along the foreshore.

I hope the environment will be the main priority for both areas and all plans encourage improvements to this beautiful area for all to enjoy. Thank you.

I support its objectives and strategies for protecting the natural environment of the Shelley-Rossmoyne foreshore and look forward to the plan’s implementation by the City.
I endorse its number one objective of preserving and enhancing the natural environment and ecological linkage of the foreshore;
I support that priority is given to continuing revegetation with local native species to provide a multi-storey habitat (Strategy 1.1);
I agree with the recommendation for formal recognition of three significant habitat areas, identified by CRREPA, at Shelley Bridge, Wadjup Point and Beatrice Avenue (Strategy 1.2) and the proposed management measures (page 51) recommended to protect these areas;
I support continuing improvements to water quality of stormwater flows into the Canning River through measures including modifications to more drains (Strategy 1.4);
I strongly endorse the recommendation to extend the width of fringing vegetation to help maintain the stability of the foreshore (Strategy 1.5b);
I acknowledge and agree with the recognition of the need for more trees to provide shade as well as habitat for birds, insects and geckos (Strategies 1.5c and 3.2); and
I support the call for discouraging new access pathways through vegetation to the river (Strategy 3.3a).

I oppose the installation of a barbecue at Wadjup Point as it is a significant habitat area. Visitor pressures need to be carefully managed in this area; the recommended installation of a barbecue there will only add to the already substantial pressures.

So much comment over the last 3 years regarding this area. Well done to the local councillors that had the insight to highlight the need for the plan along with the park area. Clearly caring for the river area and amenities for ratepayers can both be achieved. I am one of the MAJORITY that would like to see an environmentally friendly cafe on the site of the existing toilet block. Retain the dog beach and ensure the jetty is safe. Can we also somehow preserve the convict fence in the water?
