What improvements are proposed?

New traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Nicholson Road and Metcalfe Road to assign right of way to conflicting traffic movements, enhancing safety and efficiency. This improvement aims to increase traffic handling capacity and reduce the number of crashes at the intersection.

In addition to the traffic signals, other enhancements will include improved road markings and lane configurations, enhanced pedestrian crossings, and footpath construction, as well as road resurfacing to improve pavement condition. Together, these measures will create a safer and more efficient roadway for all users.

How is this project being funded?

During the 2021 State Government election, a commitment was made to deliver road improvements at the intersection of Nicholson Road and Metcalfe Road in Ferndale. The State Government has allocated 100% funding to this project, with an expectation of the City of Canning delivering this project within this financial year.

How were the proposed improvement selected?

The proposed improvements were developed and selected through detailed analysis and technical assessment, ensuring that the chosen enhancements effectively address the needs of the roadway while improving overall safety and efficiency.

The intersection performance analysis included a number of scenarios under various intersection controls to identify the best option—safety and efficiency-wise, between the existing give way control, roundabout control, and traffic signals.

The following factors were considered for each option:

    • Impact on the broader road network
    • Impact on the future widening of the Nicholson Road Bridge over the Canning River
    • Existing traffic signals at the intersection of Nicholson Road and Spencer Road
    • Environmental constraints in the Canning Regional River Park
    • Impact on other stakeholders, including the Public Transport Authority and the City of Gosnells.

Traffic modeling of each option was conducted, and traffic signals were identified as the most appropriate treatment to address the congestion and road safety concerns at the intersection.

How can I ask questions about the project?

    • Ask us a question and we’ll either answer on the project page, or we’ll email you directly.
    • Contact the City's Officer Mr. Gerson Bermudez – Traffic and Transport Engineer by phone 0481 452 039 or via email on traffic@canning.wa.gov.au.

What are the expected benefits of these improvements?

The project objective is to improve safety by reducing congestion, delays for the left turn movement out of Metcalfe Road, and queues at the intersection of Nicholson Road and Metcalfe Road.

The following benefits are expected as part of the upgrade:

    • Improving Traffic Flow: Streamlining vehicle movements to reduce delays and congestion.
    • Enhancing Safety: Implementing measures to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, thereby reducing the likelihood of accidents.
    • Community Impact: Providing a safer environment for all residents and visitors, contributing to overall community well-being.

When is construction planned to commence and how long will it take?

The project is scheduled to begin in March 2025 and is expected to be completed by June 2025.

Will I have access to my property during construction?

Yes, the City will maintain access to your property throughout the delivery and construction of these works, unless specifically advised or suitably notified otherwise. Although access will be maintained, localised traffic management will be in place to maintain a safe work area and for the protection of road users including pedestrians and cyclists.

How will this project impact my property?

As the works will include upgrades to the existing footpath and existing kerbs, reconstruction of some access driveways will be necessary to match into this infrastructure. Existing verge treatments disturbed by these works will be reinstated to the City’s standards and administrative policies.

Can I expect any noise and disruptions during the works?

Works for this project are expected to be carried outside of normal working hours between 6pm and 7am on weekdays, as to reduce traffic impacts. We understand this work may be disruptive to the local community and some traffic delays may be experienced. However, we are committed to working with stakeholders to minimise the disruptions as much as possible and we will aim to complete the works as quickly as possible, however weather conditions, contractor availability or other unforeseen circumstances may delay the works.

The City will ensure construction notification is distributed to affected residents and property owners surrounding the worksite, prior to construction activities commencing.
