- keeping like communities together as much as possible, for example keeping whole suburbs within one local government, rather than a suburb being spilt between more than one local government;
- population projections – the City believes that the desirable population should not be less than 100,000 and have a maximum of 150,000 – 170,000. This would assist in balancing economies of scale, communities of interest and services and facilities provided to our community; and
- a simplified process of amalgamation, either based on existing local government boundaries or logically defined boundaries i.e. the River and main roads
Why is the City preparing a submission ?
The City believes that it is in the best interest for the community to be heard on matters that may have a significant impact on the City of Canning and our community. The City also believes that if metropolitan local governments are forcibly reduced to less than 20, alternative boundary options should be considered. According, we have provided some alternative models for your comment.

All comments received will be carefully considered and integrated in the City of Canning's Local Government Reform final submission to the Minister of Local Government. The submission will be publicly available once it has been submitted.
