Your mission is to find creative solutions for sustainability issues at our first Canning Youth Hackathon.

Bring water to the surface! - How can we connect peoples values and behaviours to water to help create a more water sensitive community?

We're making poor choices about how we use and value water. We don't connect our day to day actions with the bigger picture and the future of our most important resource.

This is because we don’t understand where it comes from and where it goes. We need our community to be more 'water literate' so that they understand our impact on water and connect their values and behaviours to water.

We'd like you guys to connect people to water. Help bring water to the surface by developing tech or non-tech solutions that improve water literacy.

How many teams will be in the Hackathon and what happens to the ideas we come up with?

Were expecting up to 10 teams of students from Canning suburbs and schools will come together to come up with innovative solutions to sustainability issues facing the City of Canning community.

They will learn about the challenges relating to water in the City, have the opportunity to ask questions and drill down into the core issue that needs to be solved. Once students have pinpointed the problem they can solve. In this energetic environment supported by mentors and subject matter experts our great minds flourish and will build solutions! The day concludes with teams pitching the prototype they built to a panel.

A panel will choose the top three ideas and teams to take their idea through a bootcamp. This three day boot camp will count towards their WASC! The boot camp will mentor the students and  invest incredible energy into the ideas before the final Pitch It event in October.

Students will have access to investigate the idea further, get input form industry experts and refine their pitch.

Last years winning team from "hack the waste" has become such a successful duo they even won a $500 grant from the City to go to America for a Youth Entrepreneurship Summit. Their start-up idea won 5th place out of 700 teams from 50 countries!
