The City of Canning (City) and Main Roads Western Australia (MRWA) are working collaboratively on a new road safety initiative, the Low-Cost Urban Road Safety Program, to reduce the likelihood of crashes on local roads across the metropolitan area.

Low-cost road safety treatments will be applied to areas or entire streets to improve the safety of local roads and intersections. We want to reduce crashes and create a safer and more enjoyable environment for our community.

The next safety treatments are scheduled for the following streets in the Gladstone Street area:

  • Gladstone Street
  • Melbourne Street
  • Boulder Street
  • Coolgardie Street
  • Palmerston Street
  • Pitt Street
  • Walpole Street
  • Victoria Street
  • Emily Street and
  • Beaconsfield Street

What will this project include?

The following treatments and improvements are planned in this area:

These treatments will have positive impacts on speed reduction and crash reduction, with some benefits to amenities in the area.

The primary treatment selection criteria and principles for the URSP included:

  • Applying Safe Systems Principles
  • Reducing high casualty and high-risk crashes on local streets
  • Proactively reducing vehicle speeds
  • Consideration of activity generators and land use
  • Implement low-cost treatments on an area-wide or whole of street basis
  • Maintaining movement for all road users

How will this impact you?

Construction of these treatments is tentatively scheduled for August/September 2024. Owners, tenants and businesses are requested to avoid parking vehicles on the road during the works as the Construction Team will require full access to the road surface.

To complete the delivery and construction of this project, some temporary traffic management will be in place including, lane closures and short-term road closures. Specific details of any immediate impacts and disruptions will be communicated directly to affected businesses, residents, and property owners with a separate notification letter.

Upon completion of these works, the City will apply to MRWA for the installation of the new permanent road signs and line markings. MRWA can take approximately two months to install these, so the City will allow for road signs and line marking in the interim.

We understand this work may be disruptive to the local community and some traffic delays may be experienced, however we will make every effort to communicate any disruptions and thank you for your patience.

The City welcomes any information or enquiries you may have throughout the roadworks and delivery of this project.
