Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) - Draft plan feedback

What’s being shaped?

The City of Canning undertook community engagement between November 2021 and Feb 2022 as part of the review of the Disability Access & Inclusion Plan (DAIP). This feedback has informed the development of a new draft DAIP 2023-2028 which includes strategies for improving access and inclusion for people with disabilities over the next five years.

The strategies and actions that feature in the DAIP are designed to ensure everyone feels welcome, able to contribute towards decision-making, have choice and control, are able to share public spaces and enjoy events, whilst feeling a sense of belonging.

This public consultation process provides the community with an opportunity to provide further feedback to the City on the draft DAIP.

Backstory

The Disability Services Act 1993 requires all local governments to develop a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP). DAIPs assist public authorities to plan and implement improvements to access and inclusion across the following seven outcome areas:

• services and events
• buildings and facilities
• information
• quality of service
• complaints
• consultation processes
• employment

Whilst DAIPs have a strong focus on addressing barriers faced by people with disability, the strategies that address these can promote better access and inclusion for older persons, parents, youth and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

As part of the DAIP development process local governments are required to engage with stakeholders to inform the review and development of plans.

Community engagement:

The City invited Community members to share their stories, idea and experiences via the following process:

• Live Your Potential NDIS Expo interviews (5 October 21)
• Your Say online community survey (17 January –25 February 22)
• Focus Group: Activ Employment Services, Bentley (21 February 22)
• Focus Group: Good Sammy Cannington (24 February 22)
• Local Sporting Clubs: engagement with Club Development Officers (23-28 February 22)
• Workshop: Canning Access & Inclusion Advisory Group (14 March 22)

City staff also participated in the review via surveys and workshops.

The following is a summary what we heard back from our community :

• Use more graphics and videos to share information
• Provide areas at major City events where patrons can chill out and have quiet time
• Increase accessible parking and accessible toilets – “let’s go beyond the standards”
• Provide weather shelters for accessible parking and bus stops
• Improve accessibility of information on the City’s website
• Increase the opportunities for people with disability to participate in sport
• Support the motto “nothing about us without us” to drive everything the City does to support accessible communities for all ages and abilities
• Continue to improve the accessibility of buildings and facilities
• Increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities within the City
• Promote the City’s access and inclusion initiatives – “let us know what is happening”
• Acknowledge and celebrate our community’s achievements – “people with disability are doing great work out here in the community”
• Consider playground accessibility for people with disability and their families.

This above information was used to inform and guide the drafting of the DAIP (2023-28).
