Connect In Canning

Consultation has concluded

City of Canning residents are doing amazing things to keep their neighbourhoods connected by supporting their streets, suburbs and each other.

Connect in Canning aims to support folks who want to make their community a strong, connected and welcoming place to live! Use this page to get ideas, meet Community Connectors and get into the spirit of meeting new people.

Just say 'Hi neighbour!'

Relationships start with awesome people like you making a choice to connect. They start with you showing up at local events and having a warm conversation with a stranger.

There's lots of events and opportunities through the City of Canning, at libraries, sports clubs, social clubs and volunteering. Check out more information about clubs and groups you can get involved with here.

But you don't need to take on a whole new activity just to meet people! You could start by just saying hi! Small social interactions in your street or community make a big difference to how everyone feels and are the first step to building more connections.

Say hello to your neighbours and the people you see in your area. It might start a conversation, or you might just be a friendly face at the start of someone's day.

Be welcoming to all

Strong communities are built around people just like you – people with a unique life story, people of all ages and abilities, people new to a place, people at all stages of life! Through our connections to one another, we discover new things about ourselves and about the world around us.

Creating an inclusive community meets cultivating a welcoming attitude and valuing authentic, genuine connections - that might lead to new friendships!

Connection starts with you!

People championing neighbourhood spirit in Canning (that's you!) are known as Community Connectors. Some folks also register to be a Community Connector for their area, and join our Connector Network.

From addressing isolation by connecting people in their streets, to working shoulder to shoulder with our Canning Community Builder and hitting the ground running with initiatives – no day is ever the same yet the rewards are infinite.

Do you feel inspired to join our Community Connector Network? Are you already running support networks or community initiatives? Do you need some support to turn your great ideas into positive action? Or perhaps you'd just like some advice on where to start?

To register as a community connector fill in the form below or email connect@canning.wa.gov.au and the Canning Community Builder will reach out to find out more about your ideas!

  • A free cup of tea and a chat at Canning CommuniTEA

by RachelW, over 3 years ago

Every month people from around the City of Canning enjoy a free cup of tea and a chat at Canning CommuniTEA.

The Canning CommuniTEA aims to foster social connection, and create a place for people to touch base with the community. It’s open to the entire community, and always a good time.

Right from the beginning CommuniTEA was a great success, with jokes and great fun between the people who attended. From people keen to get out of the house, to folks who want to get more involved and meet people in their community, people attend for a variety of... Continue reading

  • 'You never know who you'll inspire'

by RachelW, over 3 years ago

Luul Ibrahim’s community work is a product of generations of volunteering spirit in her family.

A Community Connector from day one, Luul and her organisation Somali Support Perth has now been able to receive the support to host a leadership series for the CALD community in partnership with the City of Canning.

But it is also informed by trauma.

In March 2019, 51 people were killed in two shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, Luul rushed there to be with her family.

She said it was that experience that made her... Continue reading

  • Neighbourhood connection in Queens Park

by RachelW, over 3 years ago

From a simple Facebook group amid the first COVID-19 shutdown, to a thriving community in Queens Park, Bruce’s community connecting is already paying dividends.

Bruce said he knew people were stressed and scared in the first half of 2020, and he was too. At the suggestion of a neighbourhood liaison officer at the City of Canning Bruce started a Facebook group, dropping a flyer in letterboxes of his residential complex to let people know about it.

Over the following months he held a couple of morning teas, which attracted a small handful of people. But when he decided to host... Continue reading
