The City of Canning's City Centres provide commercial day-to-day goods and services to local residents and play an important role in our cities. The Strategic Community Plan (SCP) tasks the City with investigating the preparation of a new Local Centres Plan under Theme B4 – Urban Regeneration. The project also aligns with SCP objectives:

  • E1.1.3 Increase the City’s Urban Forest Canopy;
  • P1.1.2 Position activity centres for continued business, employment and economic growth; and
  • P1.1.3 facilitates the development of vibrant and prosperous commercial centres throughout the City.

The City Planning team completed an audit of local centres throughout the city in 2021 and identified opportunities to improve the public realm adjacent to our local businesses. The public realm is defined as:

All parts of the built environment where the public has free access and includes parks, streets, squares, and other publicly accessible spaces.

In this instance the public realm is the verges and roads between private landholdings where local businesses are located. It is envisioned that these public realm improvements will increase the appeal of each centre, provide more vibrancy and activity, and ensure they remain attractive for local businesses, residents and visitors.

The City wishes to invite business owners who operate within our local centres to discuss the current state of the centre they operate from, including what can be improved and provide us a better understanding of what the ambitions are for that particular local centre.

The City is seeking comments to spark conversations with business owners in each selected local centre, the data collected from these conversations will inform concept planning which will guide future improvements in each local centre. Please submit your comments via the form below, or you can email your comments to the strategic planning team via strategic.planning@canning.wa.gov.au
