Disability Access & Inclusion Plan (DAIP) Review (2022-2027) Community Survey

Background:
The Disability Services Act 1993 requires all local governments to develop a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP). DAIPs assist public authorities to plan and implement improvements to access and inclusion across seven outcome areas, in regards to services and events, buildings and facilities, information, quality of service, complaints, consultation processes and employment. These plans have a strong focus on addressing barriers faced by people with disability, with additional benefits for older persons, parents, youth and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds
DAIP Review:
The City of Canning is currently reviewing its previous DAIP to assess what needs to be included in the updated version to guide the City for the next five years (2022-2027). This survey will allow the City to engage with community, learn what is important to our residents and how as a local government we can plan to increase access and inclusion for our community members. The reviewed DAIP will include input from the Canning community, relevant stakeholders and will be a document that community can easily access and understand.
The City has been proudly committed to ensuring equity and social inclusion for people living with disability and we plan to build on this commitment moving forward. This is an opportunity for the City to support people of all abilities to live a rewarding and fulfilled life that allows participation and contribution in a welcoming community. The City welcomes a proactive approach to ensure everyone feels welcome, able to contribute towards decision-making, have choice and control, are able to share public spaces and enjoy events, whilst feeling a sense of belonging.
In the survey:
The terms used in the survey reflect the City's commitment to access and inclusion as articulated in our Access and Inclusion policy. Whilst the DAIP is focused on strengthening provisions for people living with disability, it also recognises that people living with disability may face other barriers that impact on their participation in the community.
- ‘Access’ includes infrastructure such as footpaths, ramps, ACROD parking and accessible toilets and includes making information available in formats that meet your needs like large print, audio and braille.
- ‘Inclusion’ refers to people of all abilities, cultural backgrounds, sexualities, genders and ages feeling welcomed by the City and having equal opportunity to participate in services, programs, events, consultation and employment.
