The City of Canning is seeking community feedback regarding the construction of road safety treatments on Tomlinson Road and Kew Street in Welshpool as a part of the Low-Cost Urban Road Safety Program. This Program is a road safety initiative of Main Roads WA and is being delivered in collaboration with the City of Canning.

This project proactively treats roads through the implementation of road safety treatments on an area-wide basis or along streets to enhance the safety of local roads and intersections. Our goal is to reduce crashes and create a safer, more enjoyable environment for the community.

What will this project include?

The City is proposing to install six road safety platforms along Tomlinson Road and Kew Street in Welshpool.

These treatments are expected to positively impact operating speeds of traffic and crash risks, while also benefiting the amenity of the area.

The primary criteria and principles for the selection of treatment areas and road safety treatments include:

  • Applying Safe Systems Principles
  • Proactively reduce the potential for casualty and high-risk crashes on local streets
  • Treating existing crash patterns
  • Lowering vehicle operating speeds
  • Considering activity generators and land use
  • Implementing low-cost treatments on an area-wide or whole-street basis
  • Maintaining movement for all road users

How will this impact you?

The construction of these treatments is tentatively scheduled for February 2025. Upon completion, the City will apply to Main Roads WA for the installation of new permanent road signs and line markings. Main Roads WA typically takes approximately two months to complete these installations, so the City will implement temporary road signs and line markings in the interim.

To ensure the safe delivery and construction of this project, temporary traffic management measures will be in place, including lane closures and short-term road closures. Specific details regarding any immediate impacts and disruptions will be communicated directly to affected businesses, residents, and property owners through a separate notification letter.

Additionally, parking on the streets will be limited and likely redistributed to surrounding areas. We understand that this work may disrupt the local community, and some traffic delays may occur. However, we will make every effort to communicate any disruptions, and we appreciate your patience during this time.
