The City is reviewing its current Local Laws, and has proposed five new local laws to replace its existing laws. These new laws are based on the Western Australian Association’s model local laws. The City advertised the initial proposed local laws in mid-2020, based on the consultation, changes were made to the proposed laws, and as a result, five of the proposed laws are being re-advertised.

The City of Canning welcomes your comments and invites written submissions. You can have your say by sending a handwritten submission by post, fax or sending an e-mail to clint.burdett@canning.wa.gov.au or though this Your say webpage. Submissions are preferred through the Your say webpage.

Section 3.5 of the Local Government Act 1995 (the Act) provides the power for local governments to make local laws to help perform their functions. Local Laws (which were once known as ‘By Laws’) are subsidiary legislation, made by Local Governments. Local Laws must not contravene any State or Federal Act or Regulation, and in the event of any inconsistency, the Act or Regulation will override the Local Law to the extent of the inconsistency.

A copy of the proposed local law may be inspected at or obtained from the City’s office at 1317 Albany Highway, Cannington between 8.15am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday, and at Riverton, Willetton, Cannington and Bentley public libraries between 9:30am and 5:00pm Monday to Friday. They are also available on the City’s website.
