The City of Canning recognises that homelessness is a complex and growing issue affecting people in Canning and has worked to address the issue of homelessness with its first Homelessness Plan, in 2021. The following Report Card summarises the progress that was made between 2021 - 2024. The revised draft plan maintains existing programs and aligns with the State Government’s 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness, “All Paths Lead to a Home.”
Purpose
The City aims to reduce homelessness to functional zero — where homelessness is rare, brief, and non-recurring — through collaboration with the community and support services.
As the closest tier of Government to the community, we are uniquely positioned to drive change, focusing on building understanding, coordinating support, and advocating for those at risk of experiencing homelessness.
This plan will:
Connect - identify opportunities for collaborative community action
Support - provide strategic direction for the City in addressing homelessness and the often - accompanying complexities
Advocate - guide the City’s role as an advocate.
Why have a Homelessness Plan?
The City is shifting to an overarching Homelessness Plan with an annual Action Plan (following our successful Safe Canning Strategy approach). This allows for regular updates and improved alignment with community needs and feedback.
What is the difference between the Homelessness Plan and the 2024 – 2025 Homelessness Action Plan?
Homelessness Plan : Serves as a framework for implementing initiatives, providing local context, and outlining principles and processes.
2024-2025 Homelessness Action Plan: Annual updates with specific actions, reviewed each August. Ensures relevance to community needs and concerns.
