Story Threads: Connecting Cultures to Country Public Art Project
Story Threads: Connecting Culture to Country is a partnership with Sister Kate's Home Kids Aboriginal Corporation to create a public artwork that will reflect and connect the diverse cultural backgrounds of Canning into one artwork. The final artwork will be incorporated into the glass doors of every space in the Hillview Intercultural and Community Centre.
The project is also part of the Council’s activation of its Reconciliation Action Plan that recognises and acknowledges Canning’s diverse history and heritage.
Sister Kate’s led two creative workshops to create a Community Story artwork that reflects the diverse cultures of the Canning region.
Workshops took place in the following locations (all in 2021):
- Burrendah Primary School: 2 and 9 August.
- Bentley Primary School: 16 and 23 August.
- Turkish Islamic Association of WA: 6 and 13 September
- Bentley Library: 20 September and 4 October
This project has now concluded. We thank everyone for their participation and look forward to unveiling the final work in January 2022.
Workshops are FREE thanks to a Lotterywest grant. The WA Government, through Lotterywest, supports community projects like this one, helping to build a better WA together.
Story Threads: Conversation in Focus
A series of focus group conversations to discuss the new Hillview Intercultural and Community Centre. We will be finding out what an inclusive space means to you and how you would want to use the space in order to connect, learn from each other and contribute to the vision of a welcoming and thriving City.
We will be running two (2) sessions as follows:Thursday 12 August 2pm-3pm and 5pm-6pm at Bentley Library
This event is now closed and we thank everyone who participated.
Story Threads: Where in the World?
An interactive project consisting of two components – one physical component and one online component. The physical component is an artwork, an embroidered map (created by artist Vesela Crossley, pictured below) that invites participants to simply use the provided needle and thread to stitch a knot of coloured thread through the spot on the map where they were born. The tour dates for the artwork are:
- Bentley Library Tuesday 28 September – Tuesday 12 October
- Cannington Leisureplex Wednesday 13 October – Tuesday 26 October
- Cannington Library Wednesday 27 October – Tuesday 10 November
- Willetton Library Thursday 11 November , Tuesday 23 November
- Riverton Library Wednesday 24 November – Thursday 16 December
The online component of the project can be found by clicking on the Story Threads: Where in the World? tab below. We invite you to tell us where you were born, where you call home today and why. The aim is to amplify the breadth of individual's journeys, highlight intercultural nature of communities and celebrate Canning's diverse voices.
