What is the Play Provision Strategy?

The Play Provision Strategy us the City's plan for playgrounds and play spaces over the next 20 years.

The Strategy aims to make the City's playgrounds appropriate, fun, stimulating and more accessible for everyone - with a goal of at least one playground located within 400m of all Canning residents.

It aims to provide a greater focus on nature and adventure play, and offer more inclusive splay spaces with better shade. You can read the full Strategy at: www.canning.wa.gov.au/playgroundproject

How did the City select the playgrounds that are being upgraded this financial year?

In developing our Play Provision Strategy, we conducted a thorough review of all 142 playgrounds in the City of Canning, and based on their condition, we developed a list of those to be upgraded as a priority.

The playgrounds in need of the most attention will be upgraded first, with more to follow. The number of playgrounds upgraded each financial year will be determined based on available budget and resources.

My local playground is not on the list. When will it be upgraded?

Playgrounds were selected for renewal based on their condition, age of equipment and location. The City regularly undertakes assessments of each of the City's 142 playgrounds and allocates a condition rating to them.

As part of the City's Play Provision Strategy, the playgrounds being upgraded this financial year have been selected, as they are considered as being in need of particular attention.

Any future playground upgrades will be guided by their condition rating; the Play Provision Strategy; available budget; and resources for that financial year.

How can I find out more?

Visit www.canning.wa.gov.au/playgroundproject to learn more about the project; read our Play Provision Strategy, and to see the list of playgrounds being upgraded this financial year.

This page will be updated regularly as the project progresses. If you can't find what you are looking for, please call us on 1300 422 664.

Can I have a say on what equipment is installed in my local park?

Yes! We welcome feedback from residents. If you live near a playground that is being upgraded, you should have received a letter with the draft design included, or you may have seen the signage up at your local park.

This will have a link to the Your Say page where you can provided your feedback.

If not, please call us on 1300 422 664 and we can send you the link, or mail you a hard copy survey form.

What considerations have been made for children and or/carers with a disability?

A requirement of the City's Disability Access and Inclusion Plan is to improve access and inclusion at Council parks and reserves, playgrounds and to our river foreshore.

Our Play Provision Strategy aims to make all of the City's playgrounds appropriate, fun, stimulating, and more accessible for everyone. That means considering things like the placement of seating, building accessible pathways and installing universally-accessible equipment where possible. This will be part of the design process for all of the playgrounds we have planned for renewal.

Have you consulted with the disability sector and community on the playgrounds?

During the development of the Play Provision Strategy, the City reached out to a number of organisations within the disability sector, as well as local residents living with a disability or acting as carers.

They were invited to participate in the survey and also to attend a workshop to discuss their concerns and the ideas they had around how we could improve the City's playgrounds. This feedback was used to draft a large part of the Strategy, which focuses on inclusivity and accessibility.

With regard to the specific parks being upgraded this financial year, the City's Play Provision Strategy and community feedback is informing their design along with the associated amenities to increase the access and inclusivity of the play spaces.

Will I still have access to my local park while the upgrades occur?

Yes, however there will be a temporary fence erected around the construction site. We ask that you take care around any machinery that is moving in and out of the site.

Can I expect any noise and disruption during the works?

Works will be carried out between standard working hours of 7am to 5pm on week days, so no after hours disturbance is expected.

    How long will construction take?

Each playground will vary, however, generally construction will take no more than four weeks.
