Why carpool?

    • Cars and fuel are expensive - reduce costs by sharing.
    • Traffic is awful! Fewer cars on the road means a happier, quicker commute for everyone.
    • Cars are a huge source of pollution, contributing to the climate emergency.
    • It's a great opportunity to get to know your colleagues and strengthen working relationships.

    What are the rules?

    • Drivers are expected to have a current drivers licence, registered and roadworthy vehicle, vehicle insurance, and follow applicable road rules.
    • All participating staff are expected to behave appropriately.
    • Smoking in vehicles while carpooling is prohibited.

    How does it work?

    1. Complete the survey to help us find you a carpooling match.
    2. You will either be contacted directly and asked if you're happy to be linked up with a potential carpooling match over email, or you'll be invited to a morning tea where you can make your own carpooling arrangements.
    3. Go forth and carpool!

How often do I have to carpool?

Whenever you like or can, whether that's every day or just occasionally!

    Are there rewards for carpooling?

Yes! A $100 fuel or grocery voucher will be gifted to one lucky carpooler each quarter (four times per year). Send in a #canningcarpool selfie to sustainability@canning.wa.gov.au to go in the draw.

Do I need to tell people where I live?

No, if you don't feel comfortable providing your address you can ask to be picked up from a crossroads or landmark on the street.

We only ask for your suburb in the survey so we know if a potential carpooling match is nearby.

What should I do if I don't feel comfortable or safe carpooling with someone?

It's important that you feel comfortable and safe while carpooling to work.

    • The survey allows you to say if you'd prefer to carpool with someone of a particular gender.
    • It's a good idea to check that all necessary licences and insurance are in place.
    • If you don't want to carpool with someone anymore for any reason, you can simply tell them that your circumstances have changed and you're no longer able to carpool.

Are there any payments involved in carpooling?

This is completely up to you and the person you choose to carpool with to negotiate. Some options may include:

    • sharing a ride that you would have taken either way
    • taking turns driving your respective cars
    • the passenger trades something with the driver, for example, makes them a cup of coffee for the drive in to work
    • splitting fuel costs by exchanging money.
