Dementia Action Week 2024 - Funded by Dementia Australia
The City of Canning was awarded $15,000 from Dementia Australia, to deliver Dementia Friendly Community Engagement initiatives in 2024.
As part of this funding we have:
1. Commenced a Canning Pole Walkers group, an inclusive social walking group that meets every Friday morning. If you would like to join us, please contact Community Development Officer, Age Friendly community@canning.wa.gov.au
2. Commenced development of Cultural Memory Bags for loan throughout our libraries. These bags have tactile, educational and memory inducing items, to foster connection between people living with dementia and their families/friends. There are Noongar culture, Chinese culture and Indian culture bags being developed and they will be available for loan soon!
3. Delivered 3 x translated community dementia friendly community education workshops and many more are lined up with local seniors clubs and groups. If your club or group would like a session delivered, to support those living with dementia and their carers, please contact Jane Wells Jane.Wells@dementia.org.au 08 6116 8638.
4. Our customer facing staff attended a Dementia Friendly community education session, so as an organisation we can better support our residents and deliver best practice customer service.
5. Riverton Library is now home to the Forget Me Not Memory Cafe, a welcoming place for people living with dementia and their carers. Join them on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, 1.30pm - 3.30pm.
6. Our Dementia Action Week 2024 Campaign will promote how our community can get involved and to become a Dementia Friend!
