Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP)

The City of Canning encourages a proactive approach to ensure everyone feels welcome and is able to enjoy events, services and share public spaces, whilst feeling a sense of belonging. The City is committed to ensuring equity and social inclusion for all community members, including people living with disability and moving forward we plan to build upon this.

To support this commitment the City is guided by the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) 2023-2028 and undertakes regular engagement with the Canning Access and Inclusion Advisory Group (CAIAG). This group supports the development, implementation, review and evaluation of various strategies and other access initiatives that promotes accessibility and inclusiveness for all.

The City is continually looking at how we can better engage with our community and this platform is just one way we can share information and show how community feedback has shaped our actions. This is also a space where you can share your stories and experiences, along with your ideas for improvement that will benefit community.

Backstory

The Disability Services Act 1993 requires all local governments to develop a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP). DAIPs assist public authorities to plan and implement improvements across the following seven outcome areas:

• services and events
• buildings and facilities
• information
• quality of service
• complaints
• consultation processes
• employment

Whilst DAIPs have a strong focus on addressing barriers faced by people of all abilities, the strategies that address these can promote better access and inclusion for people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, sexualities and genders and raise awareness of the overlapping barriers many people face in our community.
